Oregon head coach Dan Lanning has publicly defended defensive lineman Bear Alexander after UCLA coach Bob Chesney condemned a late-hit punch to quarterback Nico Iamaleava during the Bruins’ 17-15 victory over the Ducks on October 10. The incident occurred in the second quarter when Alexander allegedly struck Iamaleava at the back of the helmet after the quarterback had already been brought down by contact, an action that went unpenalized by officials despite its severity.
The punch contributed to Iamaleava’s subsequent leg injury, which has now ended his season and raised concerns about UCLA’s College Football Playoff aspirations. Chesney labeled the play ‘egregious,’ calling for stricter enforcement against such flagrant late hits.
Oregon’s defense has since faced scrutiny over the incident, with Lanning choosing to stand by Alexander amid growing backlash from opponents and fans alike.
