Former Alabama head coach Nick Saban recently voiced strong opposition to the proposed expansion of the College Football Playoff to 24 teams, arguing that the current talent pool does not support such a large field. His stance, delivered during a broadcast appearance, drew sharp criticism from former LSU national champion Breiden Fehoko.
Fehoko publicly accused the retired coach of hypocrisy, alleging that Saban benefited from unofficial player compensation methods before the current era of name, image, and likeness regulations. The former player further claimed that the shift toward legalized athlete payments contributed to Saban's decision to step away from the sidelines in 2024.
This debate coincides with a new media rights agreement involving ESPN that will see the network pay an additional 345 million dollars annually over the next five years to support the expanded playoff format.
