Mr Saturday Russell 'comes through other side' after 'real tough period'

George Russell expressed a sense of personal vindication after securing his third victory of the 2026 Formula 1 campaign at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. The Mercedes driver managed to fend off Max Verstappen during an exceptionally close finish, marking his first triumph since late June.

The result reduced the championship points gap behind his team-mate to sixty-six, though a significant margin still remains with seven or eight rounds left in the season.

Kimi Antonelli finished fifth in Baku, describing the weekend as his worst performance of the year. Despite that setback, Antonelli maintains a dominant position in the standings following eight earlier wins this season.

Russell acknowledged the impressive and consistent form of his young colleague while emphasizing his own goal of maintaining high personal standards through the final stretch of the championship.
