The Philadelphia Flyers staged a dramatic upset over the Colorado Avalanche on Monday night, securing a 3-2 victory at Xfinity Mobile Arena. Despite being shorthanded—with five key players missing—the Flyers leaned heavily on their young talent, deploying eight rookies with fewer than 100 NHL games under their belts.
Matvei Michkov led the charge with two goals, including a power-play tally in the first period and a second-period marker that extended the lead to 2-0. His three-game goal streak and six goals in 11 games this season highlight his breakout performance, while Trevor Zegras added three assists to complement the offensive push.
The Flyers’ defense also played a pivotal role, with Noah Cates stripping Nathan MacKinnon in the defensive zone to stifle a critical Avalanche threat. The win marked Philadelphia’s second consecutive victory, snapping a nine-game losing streak to start the season, as the team now looks to build momentum ahead of their rematch with Colorado on March 9 in Denver.
Goaltender Joseph Woll was stellar, stopping 24 of 26 shots and maintaining a .916 save percentage entering the game. His strong play complemented the Flyers’ offensive resilience, as they weathered late challenges from Martin Necas and T.J.
Hughes to preserve the lead. The Avalanche’s Mackenzie Blackwood, meanwhile, turned aside 21 of Philadelphia’s 24 shots but couldn’t prevent the upset.
The Flyers also made NHL history for Cole Knuble, the son of former Flyer Mike Knuble, who made his debut in the game. Skating on the fourth line, Knuble contributed to a scoring chance for Alex Bump and marked a special moment for the franchise, with his parents in attendance to witness the milestone.
