Mercedes announces George Russell to be replaced for Mexican GP FP1

Mercedes reserve driver Frederik Vesti will take over George Russell's car for the opening practice session at the Mexican Grand Prix. This appearance marks Vesti's third outing in a 2026 practice session, as the team works to satisfy mandatory rookie participation requirements.

Vesti, who has been with the Mercedes junior program since 2021 and currently serves as the team's third driver, previously logged time in Barcelona and Hungary. Deputy technical director Simone Resta noted that the session serves as a vital link between simulation data and real-world track performance.

Vesti will require one additional practice session later this year to complete the team's seasonal quota.
