McCullum wants Pietersen to challenge methods

England limited-overs head coach Brendon McCullum has welcomed Kevin Pietersen into the squad as a specialist mentor, urging the former international star to scrutinise and debate his operational strategies rather than strictly focusing on batting. Pietersen, who had voiced harsh assessments regarding the squad's commitment on their Indian tour the prior year, initially reacted with surprise when contacted for the role but subsequently accepted terms that run until the 50-over World Cup staged across South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia next autumn.

McCullum now concentrates exclusively on white-ball duties after being dismissed from his Test coaching post following a June series loss to New Zealand.

Pietersen linked up with the group prior to their six-match home campaign against Sri Lanka, featuring three T20 fixtures and three one-day internationals starting at Southampton. The Welsh-born Donald entered the lineup following standout displays for Trent Rockets and in county cricket, having generated an unmatched 232 strike rate among batters with 50 or more balls faced in the format during the calendar year, while seamer Jofra Archer sits out to recover from three consecutive Test appearances in Pakistan.
