The Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) has issued a clarification to address widespread confusion over recent changes to the run-out law in cricket. The updated rule, introduced under Appendix 2.7 and 2.8 of the ICC’s playing conditions, specifies that a fielder must have complete control of the ball in their hand or glove when breaking the wicket with their arm or hand.
This adjustment was prompted by improved television coverage revealing instances where batters were incorrectly given out when fielders had minimal control over the ball during the process. However, the MCC emphasized on October 8 that the law does not apply if the ball itself dislodges the bails—regardless of whether the fielder or wicketkeeper was holding it.
Run-outs will still stand if the ball directly hits the stumps, clarifying that only cases where a fielder’s body (not the ball) makes contact with the wicket are subject to the new control requirement. The change aims to ensure fairness while maintaining the spirit of the game’s traditional laws.
