Vinay Kumar has taken over as Karnataka’s head coach ahead of their 2026-27 Ranji Trophy campaign, stepping in after the team’s runner-up finish in the previous season. The squad faces a challenging opener against Andhra on October 11, compounded by key absences: Prasidh Krishna, V.
Vyshak, and Vidwath Kaverappa are sidelined by injuries, while K.L. Rahul, Devdutt Padikkal, and R.
Smaran are unavailable due to national team commitments. Kumar, a former Karnataka captain and the highest wicket-taker among pace bowlers in Ranji Trophy history with 442 scalps, brings extensive experience to the role, having previously coached in the IPL and led Hubli Tigers in the Maharaja T20 Trophy.
He emphasized the importance of developing younger players amid the departures, noting that veterans like Karun Nair, Mayank Agarwal, and Shreyas Gopal—who won titles under his captaincy—will mentor the next generation. The coaching staff will focus on integrating replacements into the high-pressure environment of First Class cricket while maintaining a supportive atmosphere for growth.
Kumar’s appointment comes at a critical juncture, as Karnataka must navigate a squad depleted by both injuries and international call-ups. Rahul and Smaran will depart after the Andhra match for the New Zealand-A series, while Padikkal’s absence extends through three additional fixtures due to a New Zealand tour.
Despite these challenges, Kumar highlighted the opportunity for emerging talent, stressing that senior players will play a pivotal role in guiding them through the competitive season ahead.
