Maryland football’s season hung in the balance late in a dramatic 37-30 loss to Rutgers, as a heartbreaking final play sealed the Scarlet Knights’ victory. Down 14 with just over three minutes left, quarterback Malik Washington’s Hail Mary pass to Dorian Fleming fell short by inches when Fleming’s foot landed out of bounds on the sideline, ending Maryland’s comeback attempt.
The Terps had built a 23-13 halftime lead but collapsed in the second half, surrendering 24 straight points to suffer their 12th consecutive conference loss. Freshman tight end Damon Hall Jr.
scored Maryland’s first touchdown on a one-yard run after a clutch sideline grab by Preston Howard, while cornerback Jamare Glasker made a game-saving extra-point block to preserve the lead. Rutgers’ Dylan Lonergan, however, dominated with two touchdown passes to KJ Duff, despite an early interception by Glasker.
The Terps’ offensive struggles extended beyond the passing game, as quarterback Kaleb Webb nearly fumbled on the opening kickoff and Washington went 2-for-6 in the air early on. Maryland’s tight end duo proved critical in the first half, with Hall Jr.
and Howard leading the way in a lackluster offensive performance.
