Mariners interviewing Joe Espada with his Astros future in limbo

Seattle has asked permission from Houston to speak with Astros manager Joe Espada, whose contract runs out at the end of October. The request comes as the Astros, who finished the season 81‑81 to capture the AL West but were swept by the Chicago White Sox in the wildcard round, face uncertainty about their leadership and front office.

Houston’s front office turmoil includes the dismissal of general manager Dana Brown after a failed trade attempt involving reliever Bryan Abreu and Twins outfielder Trevor Larnach. The Mariners, coming off a 76‑86 campaign that led to the firing of manager Dan Wilson, appear to view Espada as a desirable candidate, while Astros center fielder Julio Rodríguez was seen on the field at Daikan Park during the postseason series.
