Marcus Mariota injured, third-string quarterback Athan Kaliakmanis in for Commanders

Washington finds itself relying on its third-string option under center during an overseas matchup in London against Indianapolis. Marcus Mariota had stepped into the starting role because Jayden Daniels was sidelined due to an elbow issue, but that arrangement ended abruptly in the opening period.

After a collision involving Indianapolis defender Laiatu Latu caused Mariota to bend his right knee awkwardly, the backup left the field and headed toward the locker room. The team listed his status as questionable to come back due to that lower-extremity problem.

Stepping in to take over the offense is Athan Kaliakmanis, a rookie selected in the seventh round of the draft who previously played collegiate football for both Rutgers and Minnesota.
