Klopp wants to 'reclaim' flag amid German elections

During the presentation of his initial national squad lineup, newly appointed Germany manager Jurgen Klopp addressed recent political shifts following significant electoral gains by the anti-immigration Alternative for Germany (AfD). 8% of the ballots in Saxony-Anhalt, narrowly missing a total parliamentary majority, and is anticipating strong outcomes in upcoming voting across Berlin and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

Klopp highlighted the historical gravity of the moment, noting that no extreme-right movement has governed any German state since the Nazi regime orchestrated the Holocaust during the Second World War.

While conceding he lacks political expertise, the former Liverpool manager advocated for an inclusive "positive patriotism" rather than traditional national pride, which he believes can be easily distorted. Klopp expressed a desire to reclaim the national flag as a symbol of gratitude, openness, diversity, and goodwill for everyone born in or relocating to Germany.

While pointing out that societal essentials like medical professionals and healthcare workers remain paramount, he emphasized that soccer retains a unique capacity to unite communities through the collective strength of athletics.
