Ki MMA executive Rich Chou has observed a striking shift in how international MMA talent develops compared to North America, revealing that fighters overseas are entering the sport—and competing—at significantly younger ages. During recent scouting trips with Ki MMA founder Scott Coker, Chou noted that gyms in France, Japan, and South Korea are producing highly skilled prospects with extensive amateur backgrounds, often before their late 20s.
In France, where MMA became legal just five years ago, the scene has already yielded stars like UFC heavyweight champion Ciryl Gane and rising contender Salahdine Parnasse, with a thriving gym culture supporting their rise. Chou emphasized that this early competitive exposure is elevating the overall skill level of fighters from these regions, potentially surpassing traditional powerhouses that have historically relied on later development timelines.
