Kentucky’s Wildcats delivered one of the most dramatic turnarounds in college football history last week, overcoming a 34-27 deficit in overtime to defeat South Carolina 35-34. The victory, secured by a last-second two-point conversion pass from quarterback Kenny Minchey to Willie Rodriguez, marked the program’s largest road comeback ever and propelled Kentucky to a 4-1 record overall and 2-1 in SEC play.
Now, the Wildcats face their toughest challenge of the season at home against LSU, a team with identical 4-1 and 2-1 records in conference action. Both programs are also navigating new coaching landscapes, with Kentucky’s Will Stein and LSU’s interim leadership replacing outgoing coaches Brian Kelly and Joe Sloan, who left Baton Rouge to join Stein’s staff as Kentucky’s offensive coordinator.
The matchup features star quarterback Sam Leavitt, who has thrived as a dual-threat playmaker with 1,220 passing yards and eight touchdowns while adding 220 rushing yards and six scores on the ground. LSU’s defense, ranked second nationally in rushing defense, will pose a significant hurdle for Kentucky, while the Tigers’ explosive offense—led by running backs Dilin Jones and Harlem Berry—could overwhelm the Wildcats’ ground game.
Despite their recent win, Kentucky’s AP ranking dropped out of the Top 25, and oddsmakers have favored LSU by a wide margin in the opening spread for Saturday’s showdown at Kroger Field.
