Jonathan Milan has rewritten the record books at the UCI Track World Championships in Shanghai, shattering his own Individual Pursuit world record with a blistering time of 3 minutes 58.850 seconds. The Italian rider, who set the previous benchmark of 3 minutes 59.153 seconds just two years ago at the 2024 Track Worlds in Ballerup, Denmark, now stands as the first cyclist to dip under 3:59 in the discipline.
His achievement comes during qualifying, meaning he still faces competition in the final against Denmark’s Frederik Madsen, who also qualified in under four minutes. Milan’s record continues a rapid evolution in the event, with the four-minute barrier broken only a decade ago and now consistently falling at elite competitions, including four world records at this year’s European Championships in Konya, Turkey.
The progress reflects both technical advancements and the relentless pace of elite track cycling, as riders push boundaries at sea-level venues like Shanghai’s velodrome.
