Toronto Maple Leafs center John Tavares missed Friday’s practice in Las Vegas to return home for the birth of his fourth child, Tucker, and will sit out Saturday’s matchup against the Colorado Avalanche. Tavares, 36, has been a key offensive force early in the season, recording a goal and three assists in his first five games while averaging 17:10 of ice time per contest.
His absence prompted head coach Jim Hiller to reshuffle the lineup, elevating Nick Paul to the second line center spot alongside Easton Cowan and William Nylander on the wings. The adjustment leaves the third and fourth lines intact, with Paul emphasizing continuity in his play despite the promotion.
Meanwhile, the Leafs recalled defenseman Miles Wood from the AHL’s Toronto Marlies, marking his first return to the team since being acquired from the Columbus Blue Jackets earlier this season.
