The seventh-ranked Ohio State squad wasted no time taking control of its conference opener against Illinois, jumping out to a quick fourteen to zero advantage following a pair of scores on their initial offensive drives. Quarterback Julian Sayin connected with star wide receiver Jeremiah Smith on a massive seventy-two-yard touchdown strike to extend the lead during the opening quarter.
Smith previously opened the scoring earlier in the contest by hauling in a seven-yard pass from Sayin for his fourth catch and one hundred twenty-third receiving yard of the game. The junior receiver entered the matchup having already accumulated twenty-one receptions and four hundred yards on the season, bringing his total touchdown count to five following the deep score.
