Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts will miss Sunday’s matchup against the Carolina Panthers after a superficial blood clot in his calf was detected during follow-up testing. The clot, initially treated after Hurts reported discomfort following a cleat-related injury in the team’s Week 5 loss to the Los Angeles Rams, showed movement in a follow-up ultrasound on Wednesday.
Despite playing through the issue in London last week—where the Eagles fell to the Jacksonville Jaguars—team doctors recommended additional monitoring, leading to Hurts’ decision to sit out Week 6. The Eagles emphasized his health as the priority, noting they had maintained open communication with the league throughout the process.
With Hurts sidelined, rookie southpaw Cole Payton and veteran Tanner McKee—who has started twice in late-season games—will compete for the starting role. McKee, now in his fourth NFL season, holds a career passer rating of 95.7 and has shown promise in limited opportunities, though the team’s backup depth was further thinned by the recent release of Andy Dalton, who threw an interception in Philadelphia’s loss to Chicago earlier this month.
The Eagles’ offense will now rely on untested options as they navigate a challenging stretch of the schedule.
