Islanders rookie Victor Eklund holds own versus Auston Matthews’ line

Newcomer Victor Eklund experienced a surprising start after making the roster out of camp, logging just under twelve minutes of ice time during his official debut. The forward immediately faced tough competition as Toronto coach Jim Hiller pitted him directly against the top line of Auston Matthews, Kirill Marchenko, and Jack Roslovic during a tight 2-1 defeat for his club.

Islanders coach Pete DeBoer ultimately shortened his bench by sitting the newcomer for the final minutes, yet he expressed satisfaction with the youngster's overall progression and scoring opportunities as the match developed. In other team developments, injured forward Mat Barzal is showing positive signs in his recovery from a left kneecap injury and could resume skating shortly despite a minor adjustment to the original rehabilitation schedule.

Additionally, ownership updates confirmed that Nick Leopard has joined the organization as a lead investor alongside David Shuman after acquiring a minority stake in the franchise.
