The New York Islanders appear to have finalized their fourth-line configuration ahead of the upcoming regular season opener. Following a recent preseason matchup against the New Jersey Devils, head coach Pete DeBoer's lineup choices point toward Casey Cizikas centering a unit flanked by Ondrej Palat and Anthony Duclair.
During Saturday's exhibition contest, which ended in a 4-1 defeat, the team utilized an eleven-forward and seven-defenseman setup. Despite the unusual grouping combining Cizikas's direct style with Duclair's offensive speed and Palat's veteran presence, the club hopes the trio can generate much-needed secondary scoring.
In addition to setting the forward combinations, the franchise trimmed its roster significantly by sending several players to the AHL and placing others on waivers. Medical updates from the coaching staff indicated that Matthew Schaefer and Brayden Schenn were held out of the recent exhibition purely as a precaution due to minor physical tweaks and are expected to be ready for the upcoming contest in Toronto.
Meanwhile, Mathew Barzal remains listed as day to day regarding his left kneecap injury, though his participation status for the immediate future has not been officially confirmed.
