A prominent ESPN columnist has sparked debate over the future of the Big Ten Conference by suggesting Ohio State, Michigan, and Penn State could break away to become independent programs ahead of the expansion to a 24-team playoff. Dan Wetzel argued that the current 18-team Big Ten structure dilutes the value of conference championships for elite programs, leaving them with limited scheduling flexibility and diminished competitive significance.
He compared the situation to Notre Dame, which operates independently and guarantees a spot in the playoff while controlling its own schedule and maximizing media exposure. Wetzel proposed that the Buckeyes, Wolverines, and Nittany Lions could replicate this model by forming a separate scheduling agreement, potentially tripling their media revenue.
However, the plan faces challenges, including securing 10 additional opponents willing to face them annually, particularly in close geographic proximity. The idea comes amid a tight Big Ten race, where Ohio State recently strengthened its playoff position with a key win, though the conference’s expansion could further complicate its structure.
