The Minnesota Timberwolves are entering the 2024–25 NBA season with a fresh start under first-year head coach Tim Lewis, who becomes the league’s first British-born coach. After a three-year stint coaching the Eneos Sunflowers in Japan—where he led the team to a championship in January—Lewis returned to Minnesota at the urging of longtime friend Chris Finch, who now serves as the Timberwolves’ head coach.
Lewis, born in Saint Asaph, Wales, has a storied coaching career spanning Thailand, Qatar, Germany, Belgium, Canada, the U.S., and Panama, while also contributing to England and Great Britain’s youth development programs for over 15 years. His prior NBA ties include a brief role with the Timberwolves’ G League affiliate, the Iowa Wolves, during the COVID-19 pandemic, where he focused on post-game analysis—a niche responsibility at the time.
With the Timberwolves showing early promise in the preseason (3–3), Lewis now aims to guide star forward Anthony Edwards toward the franchise’s first NBA title, continuing a global coaching journey that blends international experience with a deep connection to the sport’s elite levels.
