Both nations currently share identical rating points, but England secured the position due to a superior calculation derived from fewer matches played. Meanwhile, the Shreyas Iyer-led Indian side recently dropped the premier ranking for the second occasion this year despite managing recent bilateral series victories over Zimbabwe and Afghanistan under the new captaincy.

Earlier in the season, India had emerged victorious during a high-scoring semi-final clash against the same English rivals at Wankhede Stadium before successfully defending their global crown.
