Ahead of the upcoming three-match home ODI series against West Indies, former national team batter Dinesh Karthik has suggested that young captain Shubman Gill needs to assert firmer control over the squad. Gill took over the leadership role from Rohit Sharma last year, aiming to build momentum toward the 2027 World Cup, though his tenure has produced only a single series victory thus far.
Karthik noted that the squad currently reflects the vision of head coach Gautam Gambhir and former selector Ajit Agarkar more than Gill's own identity, urging the skipper to forge a stronger partnership and demand respect.
Echoing these sentiments, former cricketer Ajinkya Rahane emphasized that despite Gill's youth and limited experience, the shrinking timeline before the global tournament means he cannot afford a slow development curve. Rahane argued that the captain must step up communication with the head coach to establish clear authority regarding the brand of cricket he wants to implement.
