Following a steep defensive collapse resulting in a 42-19 defeat against the fifth-ranked Buckeyes over the weekend, Illinois parted ways with its defensive coordinator on Sunday. Head coach Bret Bielema and his assistant reached a mutual parting of ways after the squad surrendered over five hundred yards of total offense during the contest, dropping the team record to two wins and two losses.
Prior to joining the Illinois staff ahead of the current campaign following a lengthy tenure leading Montana, the departing coordinator had managed a strong record at the FCS level. The Illini defense has struggled significantly against Football Bowl Subdivision opponents thus far, prompting an immediate leadership shakeup as the program attempts to salvage the remainder of its schedule.
