How Has Oklahoma Fared Coming Off a Bye Week Under Brent Venables?

Brent Venables and the Oklahoma program face a critical open date during the 2026 campaign after opening the year with a 2-2 record and unresolved questions at the quarterback position following John Mateer's early struggles. The upcoming schedule brings a tough matchup against Texas at the Cotton Bowl, an arena that has historically presented major difficulties for the head coach.

Reviewing previous performances following an open week under Venables reveals mixed results, beginning with a 27-13 victory over Iowa State in 2022 sparked by Dillon Gabriel and Eric Gray. The following season brought a narrow 31-29 win against UCF despite a defensive letdown, while the 2024 slate brought both extremes through a 34-3 blowout loss to Texas and a subsequent 24-3 triumph over Alabama featuring heavy ground production from Jackson Arnold and Xavier Robinson.
