Prior to their September 26 matchup at Nippert Stadium, head coach Scott Satterfield urged supporters to focus on the battle in the trenches between the Cincinnati Bearcats and Kansas State. His squad successfully delivered on that prediction by overcoming a halftime deficit to secure a 31-26 victory, largely by dominating the ground game.
Cincinnati churned out 271 rushing yards while limiting their opponents to 155, with strong performances from rushers Gi'Bran Payne and Cole Tabb, the latter of whom scored three touchdowns after halftime.
Defensively, coordinator Nate Woody's unit kept dynamic dual-threat quarterback Avery Johnson mostly contained on the ground, restricting him to just 38 rushing yards and forcing him into 50 passing attempts. Offensive linemen Joe Cotton, Evan Tengesdahl, Taran Tyo, Xavier Lozowicki, and Judea Milon anchored the blocking efforts that ultimately paved the way for the decisive yardage advantage.
