The long-awaited leadership transition in Indian women’s cricket finally took place on October 6, as Harmanpreet Kaur stepped down as captain across all formats after a decade at the helm. The 37-year-old veteran, who led the team since 2016 and guided them to back-to-back Asian Games gold medals, handed over the reins following a review meeting with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
Her departure came amid growing pressure, particularly after India’s disappointing exits from consecutive T20 World Cups, which raised questions about her leadership in the shortest format despite her success in longer games, including the 2023 ICC Women’s ODI World Cup win on home soil.
