Washington State’s upcoming clash with Oregon State on Saturday will feature a throwback uniform combination for the Cougars, as they return to a gray helmet, white jersey, and gray pants setup last worn in 2022 against Wisconsin. The gray helmets, which have been a staple this season, will now pair with a white road jersey—the same look WSU has worn in its first three road games, all of which ended in defeat.
This marks the third time the Cougars have sported the gray helmets this year, with the first two appearances including the script logo against Arizona and Fresno State, both of which also featured the gray pants. Historically, WSU’s gray helmets with the outlined logo boast a 4-3 record, while the white jerseys and gray pants have underperformed, with the former at 18-34 and the latter at 15-9.
The team’s decision to unveil the uniform via equipment staff footage instead of a player reveal adds intrigue, especially with key players like quarterback Tony Freeman sidelined due to injury and Caden Pinnick benched in favor of redshirt freshman Owen Eschelman, who will lead the offense in his first collegiate start. Eschelman, a dual-threat quarterback with over 2,600 passing yards and 19 rushing touchdowns in high school, joins WSU after a late transfer from South Dakota State, where he initially committed before following his coach to Pullman.
