Virginia’s 3–0 win over Syracuse on Saturday was far from the dominant statement expected, as the Cavaliers struggled through a muddy, rain-soaked contest before rallying late to secure the victory. Quarterback Beau Pribula managed just under 100 passing yards and a lone touchdown to wide receiver Da’Shawn Martin, with fans vocalizing frustration by booing the team twice—once at halftime and again in the third quarter.
The running game, however, provided the backbone of the offense, with Jekail Middlebrook nearly reaching triple digits on the ground and contributing two key touchdowns, while Xay Davis also added a rushing score. Despite the ground game’s efficiency, the rest of the offense fell short: wide receivers combined for just eight catches and 106 yards, tight ends failed to register a single reception, and the offensive line—despite its usual dominance—allowed seven tackles for loss and a sack, only improving late in the game.
Defensively, Virginia’s front four delivered one of their best performances of the season, recording four tackles for loss and a sack while controlling their matchups against Syracuse’s offensive line. The secondary, however, was overshadowed by the passing game’s inefficiency, as Pribula’s misfires limited opportunities for receivers and tight ends.
Backup quarterback Eli Holstein’s name has resurfaced in fan discussions as a potential solution, given Pribula’s lackluster outing, while the offensive line’s early struggles contrasted sharply with their expected dominance. The Cavaliers’ late surge and Orange turnovers ultimately decided the game, but the underlying issues—particularly at quarterback and in the passing attack—remain pressing concerns heading into future matchups.
