Max Brown, a senior on DePauw University’s golf team, only began seriously considering college golf in his sophomore year of high school—a delay that left him navigating a system he knew little about. From Spring Lake, Michigan, Brown was the first in his family to pursue higher education, and his parents, while supportive, lacked insight into the recruiting process.
With no clear ranking among his peers and Michigan State University seemingly out of reach, Brown turned to an unexpected resource: a college golf advisor. Michael Burcin, a former University of Wisconsin coach and founder of Under Par Consulting, connected with Brown after they met at a tournament in Charleston, South Carolina.
Burcin’s guidance transformed Brown’s approach, refining his game and helping him secure a spot at DePauw, where he now studies business analytics. Advisors like Burcin, who charge between $2,500 and $10,000 annually, are becoming more common in golf as the industry catches up to the broader college admissions consulting market, where fees for tailored strategies can exceed six figures.
