UFC veteran Gerald Meerschaert officially announced his retirement from mixed martial arts after a 20-year career, ending with a second-round TKO loss to Julius Walker at UFC Vegas 122. The 38-year-old fighter, who has competed in 60 professional bouts—including half in the UFC—revealed the decision was made in consultation with his wife and stemmed from his age and the physical demands of the sport.
Though he left open a slim possibility of returning for a special opportunity, his six-fight losing streak and the UFC’s likely reluctance to retain him make a comeback highly improbable. Meerschaert, who began fighting in 2007, also hinted at a post-fighting career in air conditioning, signaling a clear shift away from the Octagon.
The retirement marks the conclusion of a storied career that spanned eras, including a period when head butts were still legal in competition. Meerschaert’s announcement came shortly after his loss, where he removed his gloves mid-fight to inform commentator Michael Bisping of his departure from the sport.
With no immediate plans to return, the fighter’s legacy as a long-time UFC competitor now appears complete.
