British Cycling has pulled 27-year-old Olympic medallist Matt Richardson from the Great Britain squad ahead of the World Track Cycling Championships in Shanghai, citing an ongoing misconduct investigation. The decision comes after Richardson, who recently switched allegiance from Australia to Great Britain, was named in the team just last week.
His absence removes a key contender from the sprint and keirin events, where he had been expected to compete for medals in the team sprint, individual sprint, and keirin disciplines.
Richardson’s career has been marked by high achievement, including two silver medals and a bronze at the Paris 2024 Olympics. However, his path to representing England at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow was cut short after a crash during a keirin event in Japan earlier this year.
British Cycling declined to elaborate on the investigation, and Richardson’s representatives have not yet responded to BBC Sport’s inquiries.
