Angel Reese has claimed the WNBA Defensive Player of the Year distinction from the Associated Press on Sunday, edging out A'ja Wilson after Wilson secured the award across three of the past four campaigns. The former LSU standout wrapped up her regular season pacing the association in boards for a third consecutive year while placing third in total steals, compiling 521 total rebounds with 315 on the defensive end alongside 77 steals to average 1.8 steals and a league-leading 12.1 rebounds per contest.
During her debut campaign with the Atlanta Dream, Reese became the initial athlete in competition history to surpass 500 boards in a single season while simultaneously establishing new league benchmarks for double-doubles.
Alongside teammate Rhyne Howard landing on the All-AP Second Team, Reese stands as the inaugural Atlanta franchise member to secure the AP Defensive Player of the Year accolade. As she prepares for her first postseason action in the professional ranks, the 6-foot-4 forward aims to secure the organization's initial playoff victory since 2018.
Selected seventh overall by the Chicago Sky during the 2024 draft, Reese missed the postseason in each of her two years with her former club before arriving in Atlanta.
