Florida Gators sophomore quarterback Tramell Jones Jr. is poised to earn his first career start against the Texas Longhorns after starter Aaron Philo was ruled out with a shoulder injury.
The 6’0, 196-pound Jones, a consensus four-star recruit out of Jacksonville (Fla.) Mandarin, has spent the offseason competing with Philo under new offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner, who brought Philo to Gainesville from Georgia Tech. Jones, who played just two games last season before the coaching change, showed promise as a high school prospect with a 22-13 record and steady improvement as a starter in one of Florida’s top classifications.
His accuracy and mechanics drew attention at offseason events, though he occasionally struggles against pressure and needs to tighten up his interception rate. A former Florida State commit, Jones flipped to the Gators in 2024 after visiting the program and impressed as a pocket passer with arm talent, though he lacks elite physical traits compared to other 2025 quarterback prospects.
