UCLA’s undefeated season (6-0) took another step forward with a 17-7 victory over Wisconsin at the Rose Bowl Stadium, as the Bruins leaned heavily on a breakout performance from backup quarterback Ty Dieffenbach. Stepping in for injured starter Nico Iamaleava, Dieffenbach delivered a polished debut, completing 22 of 33 passes for 264 yards and a single interception—a throw that ended the first half but did little to dampen his poise.
His leadership fueled a dominant fourth-quarter drive, including a 97-yard scoring sequence that extended UCLA’s lead to 10 points and set the tone for a defensive shutout in the second half. Wisconsin’s offense, typically built around its dual-threat quarterback Colton Joseph, was stifled entirely, managing just 214 total yards and no points in the first half while the Bruins’ defense held them to under 100 passing yards alone.
UCLA’s ground game, however, faltered for the first time this season, mustering only 120 rushing yards with no back crossing the 40-yard mark, as Wisconsin’s defense clamped down on the Bruins’ usual three-headed rushing attack. Despite the struggles on the ground, UCLA’s passing game thrived on third downs, converting 13 of 20 attempts to maintain possession for over 37 minutes—a disciplined approach that kept Wisconsin’s aggressive defense off balance.
The game was marred by an unusually high number of penalties, with Wisconsin accruing 10 flags for 110 yards and UCLA not far behind at eight penalties for 78 yards, though neither unit’s offensive inefficiency could overcome the Bruins’ defensive dominance or Dieffenbach’s clutch playmaking.
