England moved closer to sealing a 3-0 series sweep on the opening day of the third men's Test against Pakistan, capitalising on another breakdown in the visitors' batting line-up. Following the pre-match anthems, Ollie Robinson initiated proceedings with the ball, hunting for his 100th Test dismissal. Facing him on strike was Saim Ayub alongside opening partner Azan. The touring side picked up their first runs through four leg byes sent down the leg side during the opening over, leaving the total at 4-0 while both batters remained on zero.

Robinson thought he had reached his milestone during that same initial over after beating the left-handed Ayub on the outside edge before cutting back inward to strike him on the pad. The umpire initially raised his finger to award the leg-before-wicket appeal as Ayub attempted to shoulder arms. However, replays demonstrated that the delivery struck outside the line and was flying comfortably over the crossbar, denying the bowler his century of wickets for the time being.
