The Miami Dolphins have opened the 2026 campaign with five consecutive defeats, positioning them as a likely contender for the first overall selection in the 2027 NFL Draft as they continue a full franchise rebuild. Among the top prospects, Ohio State wide receiver Jaremiah Smith has risen to the top of Miami’s wish list, with the potential to become only the fourth receiver ever taken first overall.
Sports Illustrated analyst Alain Poupart cautions the Dolphins against banking on a wide receiver, noting that the last ten Super Bowl‑winning teams featured 13 top‑five picks but just one was a receiver—Sammy Watkins, who was originally drafted by Buffalo. He also points to the limited playoff impact of elite receivers like Calvin Johnson, Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle, suggesting Miami might prioritize another position to accelerate its rebuild.
