A single play from the 2010 American League Championship Series has become legendary among Texas Rangers fans—and not for the right reasons. In Game 4 at Yankee Stadium, the Rangers trailed the Yankees 2-1 in a must-win game, with the Bronx Bombers needing to force a Game 5.
After a scoreless first two innings, Robinson Cano’s fly ball to right field in the second seemed like a routine out—until a fan in a backwards hat snagged it in the first row, robbing Nelson Cruz of a potential game-saving catch. The moment, immortalized in a widely shared GIF, became a symbol of Rangers’ playoff frustration, even as the team rallied to win 10-3 later that night, eventually sweeping the series and advancing to the World Series for the first time in franchise history.
The play’s infamy grew further when the Rangers faced a similar heartbreak in the 2011 playoffs, though this time they fell short in the end.
