Veteran golfer Darren Fichardt made a dramatic surge in the Simmons Bank Championship, firing an 11-under 61 in the second round to take a three-shot lead and earn a spot on the 59 watch. The 51-year-old began the day with a par before exploding with a birdie-birdie-eagle-birdie stretch, followed by five straight birdies to reach 10 under through 11 holes.
His final round total tied his career-low score and set a tournament record, vaulting him into 13th place in the Charles Schwab Cup standings—just inside the top 36 needed to secure a 2027 PGA Tour Champions card. Fichardt’s strong play came after a challenging season that included six pre-qualifiers and limited tournament appearances, making this breakthrough all the more significant as he eyes a potential title and automatic tour card at the season finale in Phoenix.
Chasing Fichardt are Zach Johnson, who leads the circuit with six wins this season, and Steven Alker, who sits tied for third at 11 under after a 67. Johnson, who entered the weekend one shot back, shot a 67 to remain in contention, while Henrik Stenson also tied for third.
Only four golfers are currently double-digit under par through 36 holes, with Fichardt’s performance marking a pivotal moment in his bid to finish the year strong and lock down his future on the PGA Tour Champions circuit.
