Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell hinted at key defensive adjustments ahead of Sunday’s matchup with the Arizona Cardinals, signaling expanded roles for two players who have seen limited action so far this season. Cornerback Keith Abney, a fifth-round rookie, has appeared in just 25 snaps—all in the team’s season opener—after spending camp behind Roger McCreary and Christian Izien at nickel.
With Izien now splitting time at safety due to injuries to Avonte Maddox and Thomas Harper, and McCreary shifting to outside cornerback following Rock Ya-Sin’s benching, Abney could finally step into a more prominent role. Meanwhile, veteran safety Jalen Mills, signed just two weeks ago after Maddox and Harper’s injuries, made his debut in Detroit’s loss to the Carolina Panthers, logging four snaps in both safety and nickel roles.
Mills could relieve Izien, who has struggled in coverage, or further complicate the Lions’ secondary depth chart, which may also involve Ennis Rakestraw or even Pro Bowl safety Brian Branch—though Branch’s return from an Achilles tear remains uncertain, with Campbell noting he’ll need time to regain his rhythm.
