Simsbury High School’s football team has defied expectations this season, matching its combined win total from the past three years with a 4-1 record after just five games. The Trojans, led by first-year coach Jim Caouette, have thrived under the guidance of their experienced senior class, including standout quarterback Braeden Siano and defensive leader Kayveon Long, who has already recorded 67 tackles and a safety in five games.
After going 1-9 last season and failing to win more than two games in the two years prior, Simsbury’s turnaround has been fueled by the leadership of its veterans, who have elevated the program both on and off the field. The Trojans’ only setback came in a narrow 40-36 loss to Middletown in the season opener, but their 16-0 victory over Farmington last week—highlighted by Siano’s two touchdown passes and Long’s interception—has solidified their playoff hopes as they sit sixth in the Class L rankings with a bye week ahead before their next matchup on October 23 at Bristol Eastern.
Meanwhile, other Connecticut teams have also made their mark, with Southington’s Jacoby Roman throwing for 180 yards and two touchdowns in a 29-6 win over Manchester, and Tim Hickman leading the Cougars to a 23-14 victory with a rushing and passing touchdown against Morgan/Old Saybrook/Westbrook. Plainville’s Anthony Abarno, meanwhile, continues to dominate with 1,201 passing yards and 71 completions, ranking second in the state as the Blue Devils remain undefeated at 4-0.
