Colorado offensive coordinator Brennan Marion has drawn parallels between the current struggles of quarterback Julian Lewis and the early-season difficulties faced by Shedeur Sanders when he first arrived in Boulder. Marion noted that Sanders, who transitioned from Jackson State after years of training under his father, also experienced a rough initial period before developing into a top-tier college passer.
In contrast, Lewis, who skipped a year of high school football before joining the program, has faced immediate pressure to perform without a similar adjustment window.
Lewis was named the starting quarterback for the 2026 campaign but has failed to produce against Power Four opponents, leading to him being benched after a poor first half against Baylor. While Shedeur Sanders eventually led the Buffs to a 9-4 record in his final season, Marion argues that Lewis is still a work in progress who requires more time to become comfortable in the system.
