Clark hits 89 to put Sussex on top against Notts

Tom Clark compiled 89 alongside half-centuries from Charlie Tear and Tom Price to guide Sussex into a strong position on day two against title hopefuls Nottinghamshire at Hove. After Nottinghamshire were bowled out for 240—having seen Brett Hutton post 60 while Jaydev Unadkat secured 4-83—the hosts answered with 308-6 to earn the round's sole Division One batting bonus point and establish a 68-run lead.

Sussex had slumped to 35-2 following the dismissals of Tom Haines, who was caught at mid-wicket off Olly Stone, and George Thomas, bowled by Tom Giles. Clark then combined with Tear for a vital 132-run partnership across 33 overs, striking 11 fours and a six before dragging an errant Hutton delivery onto his stumps.

Tear reached his half-century before falling bowled to a turning delivery from Liam Patterson-White, while Oli Carter was removed cheaply by Stone. Despite wicketkeeper Mitch Hay squandering a stumping opportunity off Patterson-White when John Simpson had made 31, Simpson and the unbeaten Price, who struck 56 not out, ensured Sussex retained control.

Hutton and Stone concluded the day with two wickets apiece, leaving Nottinghamshire with only two bonus points as their championship rivals Warwickshire and Somerset made positive strides in their respective fixtures.
