Notre Dame quarterback CJ Carr is breaking from a storied Michigan football legacy that spans decades. His father, Jason Carr, played quarterback for the Wolverines from 1992 to 1995, primarily as a backup, while his grandfather, Lloyd Carr, was the legendary Michigan head coach during that era.
Despite the family’s deep ties to Ann Arbor—including Jason’s college career and his own father’s coaching tenure—CJ chose to pursue his football journey elsewhere, ultimately committing to Notre Dame. His mother, Tammi Carr, also grew up in the Michigan football ecosystem; her father, Tom Curtis, played for the Wolverines in the 1960s, and she met Jason while attending the university.
Tammi later co-founded the ChadTough Defeat DIPG Foundation in honor of her youngest son, Chad, who passed away from brain cancer in 2015, channeling her family’s resilience into advocacy for pediatric brain tumors. The Carr family’s football lineage remains a defining part of Michigan’s history, even as CJ carves his own path in college football.
