Investigative journalist Pablo Torre’s latest deep dive into NFL safety protocols has uncovered sharp criticism from concussion expert Chris Nowinski, who dismissed the league’s push for Guardian caps as a misleading public relations ploy. Nowinski, a former WWE wrestler and co-founder of the Concussion & CTE Foundation, argued that the NFL’s own research disproves the caps’ effectiveness, yet the league continues to promote them as a concussion safeguard.
High school players, he noted, are fitted with weaker versions of the caps—models the NFL itself rejected—while the league’s mandated equipment offers only marginal benefits at best. Nowinski warned that the added padding can even exacerbate rotational forces during impacts, potentially worsening injuries rather than preventing them.
His skepticism extends to the NFL’s broader approach, suggesting the Guardian cap initiative is more about optics than genuine player protection, despite its growing visibility in games and practices this season.
