Chinmay Sutar has entered the record books by hitting an unbeaten 400 for Mizoram against Nagaland in a Ranji Trophy Plate group encounter at the Nagaland Cricket Stadium in Sovima. The milestone made him only the second Indian batsman to reach the 400-run mark in first-class cricket and the second individual to record a quadruple century in the history of the Ranji Trophy.
Sutar also eclipsed the previous second-highest score in Ranji Trophy history, moving past the 379 runs made by Prithvi Shaw.
The monumental innings, achieved while Sutar was appearing in just his second first-class match, ended when Mizoram declared their innings at 581 for nine. Over the course of his stay at the crease, Sutar confronted 517 deliveries, hitting 46 boundaries and clearing the ropes for seven sixes to finish on exactly 400 not out.
Sutar's performance place him behind only BB Nimbalkar in the Ranji Trophy record books. Nimbalkar holds the tournament record courtesy of an unbeaten 443 compiled for Maharashtra against Kathiawar during the 1948-49 season.
Assisting Mizoram's imposing total, Jehu Anderson contributed 69 runs during the innings. Towards the end of the batting effort, Sutar shared an unbroken tenth-wicket stand alongside teammate Lalrempunia Chhakchhuak. Chhakchhuak held up his end by scoring 14 not out from 76 balls before the team declared.
Chinmay Sutar's father is Rajesh Sutar.
