The Cleveland Guardians stormed back from a 2-0 deficit in the first inning to defeat the Tampa Bay Rays 7-3 in Game 1 of the American League Championship Series. Chase DeLauter and Patrick Bailey delivered key offensive blows with solo home runs in the sixth and seventh innings, while José Ramírez chipped in with a crucial RBI single in the ninth to secure the win.
The Guardians’ bullpen combined for five dominant innings of one-run, two-hit ball, with Cade Smith pitching a perfect ninth inning to cap off the performance. Tampa Bay’s Drew Rasmussen, who had nearly pitched a no-hitter in the ALDS against the Yankees, lasted six innings before the Guardians’ offense took over, including a game-tying two-run single by Nathaniel Lowe in the eighth.
The win marked Cleveland’s second consecutive playoff series comeback after overcoming a 0-2 deficit against the Chicago White Sox in their divisional series. Meanwhile, Tampa Bay’s Cedric Mullins provided the Rays’ only other run with a solo homer, but the team fell short in their third ALCS appearance in franchise history.
Game 2 is set for Tuesday night at Tropicana Field, with rookie lefty Parker Messick and Freddy Peralta facing off on the mound.
