The College Football Playoff is moving toward a significant structural shift, with plans to double its field to 24 teams starting in 2027. This expansion is expected to be finalized soon, pending necessary approvals.
To secure the broadcast rights for this larger format, ESPN has reportedly agreed to pay an additional $345 million annually over the next five years. This financial commitment comes on top of the $1.3 billion the network already pays for existing coverage.
As part of this transition, conference championship games are anticipated to be removed from the schedule.
