FIFA President Gianni Infantino’s bid for a fourth term has gained momentum after Victor Montagliani, president of CONCACAF, announced he will not challenge Infantino in March’s election. Montagliani, 61, had been seen as a potential rival following Infantino’s controversial plan to sell stakes in the World Cup to private investors, which sparked global backlash.
Instead, Montagliani will seek a final term as CONCACAF head, removing him from the race against Infantino, who has confirmed his intention to run again. The opposition to Infantino, led by UEFA, now faces pressure to unite behind a single candidate before the November 18 deadline, though no clear alternative has emerged yet.
Meanwhile, UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin will also pursue a fourth term, reversing his earlier stance that he would not stand again. Čeferin’s decision comes as UEFA reaffirmed its opposition to Infantino’s leadership and unveiled a 14-point reform plan for FIFA.
Former Tottenham Hotspur and Switzerland defender Ramón Vega has expressed interest in running but remains uncertain whether he can secure the necessary support to qualify for the ballot.
